About this tool

This converter turns an HbA1c result (%) into an estimated average glucose (eAG) and vice versa. eAG expresses your A1C on the same scale as an everyday glucose meter — mg/dL or mmol/L — which many people find easier to picture. It uses the relationship published by the American Diabetes Association from the A1c-Derived Average Glucose (ADAG) study: eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × A1C − 46.7. The mmol/L value is obtained by dividing the mg/dL result by 18.0182, the same glucose factor used for lab-value conversions. The result is a purely mathematical conversion that depends only on the A1C value you enter — not on your age, sex or body. It does not measure your blood, diagnose anything, or set a target. Conversion formula

The conversion uses the ADA/ADAG linear relationship: • eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × A1C(%) − 46.7 • eAG (mmol/L) = eAG(mg/dL) ÷ 18.0182 • A1C (%) = (eAG(mg/dL) + 46.7) ÷ 28.7 For example, an A1C of 7% gives 28.7 × 7 − 46.7 = 154.2 mg/dL, which is 154.2 ÷ 18.0182 = 8.6 mmol/L.

How to read the result

eAG is an estimate of your average glucose over roughly the previous 2–3 months — not a reading for any single moment. It will differ from the numbers on your meter or CGM at breakfast or bedtime, and two people with the same A1C can have different day-to-day patterns. The conversion tells you nothing about whether a value is good or bad for you; A1C goals are individual and are set with your clinician. They are measured differently, so eAG will usually not match any individual meter reading, and it should not be used as a substitute for checking your glucose.
