How these counters work
These are not random numbers and there is no live feed. Each counter starts from a documented base value at a fixed moment, then advances by a fixed rate every second, so the same instant always produces the same figure — you could reproduce every value with a calculator. "Today" counters reset at 00:00 UTC and "this year" counters reset on January 1 (UTC). Every card links the source behind its base value and rate — the UN, the Global Carbon Budget, the FAO, the OECD, the Energy Institute, IDC and the ITU. They are honest approximations of a moving reality, not measurements of this exact second.

Are these numbers live?
They are deterministic estimates, not a live data feed. Each counter advances from a published base value at a fixed per-second rate, so it is smooth, reproducible and works with no network connection.
Where do the figures come from?
Every counter links its own sources: population and births/deaths from the UN World Population Prospects 2024, CO₂ from the Global Carbon Budget, forest loss from the FAO, plastic from the OECD, energy from the Energy Institute, data from IDC's Global DataSphere, and internet users from the ITU.
Why do the 'today' counters start near zero?
Counters labelled "today" reset at midnight UTC and "this year" counters reset on 1 January UTC, exactly like a worldometer-style clock, so they show the amount accumulated since that reset.
