Earth forms
Out of a disk of dust and rubble around the young Sun, our planet finishes assembling 4.54 billion years ago. The Hadean world is a hellscape of molten rock and constant impacts.
Oceans form
By ~4.4 billion years ago the surface had cooled enough for liquid water. The oldest mineral grains on Earth, zircons, record water this early — the cradle for everything to come.
First life
The oldest traces of life — simple single-celled microbes — date to ~3.7 billion years ago. Life appeared astonishingly early, then stayed microscopic for billions of years.
Oxygen-makers (Great Oxidation)
Around 2.4 billion years ago, cyanobacteria flooded the air with oxygen — a poison to most life then. This Great Oxidation Event reshaped the planet's chemistry forever.
Complex cells
By ~2 billion years ago, cells with a nucleus (eukaryotes) appeared — the kind of cell that builds every plant, animal and fungus. It took half of Earth's history to get here.
Multicellular life
Around 1 billion years ago, cells learned to live together as one body. Even now you're scrolling — most of Earth's story is still just microbes and simple life.
Snowball Earth
About 720 million years ago, ice may have covered the entire planet, pole to pole. Life clung on, and the thaw set the stage for the explosion that followed.
Cambrian explosion
541 million years ago, complex animals burst onto the scene almost all at once — eyes, shells, limbs. Notice how far you scrolled to get here: 88% of Earth's history is already behind you.
First fish
Around 500 million years ago the first true vertebrates — jawless fish — appeared. Our own backbone traces all the way back to these little swimmers.
Plants colonize land
About 470 million years ago, plants crept out of the water and greened the bare continents — the first forests would soon transform the air and the land.
First land animals
Around 375 million years ago, fish with sturdy fins hauled themselves onto land and became the first four-legged animals — the ancestors of every amphibian, reptile, bird and mammal.
Eggs leave the water
By ~320 million years ago, animals evolved the shelled egg, freeing them from water to breed. Life could finally conquer the dry interiors of the continents.
The Great Dying
252 million years ago, the worst extinction ever wiped out about 90% of marine species. Life nearly ended here — but the survivors gave rise to the age of dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs rise
Around 230 million years ago the first dinosaurs appeared. They would rule the land for over 150 million years — far longer than mammals have so far.
First mammals
About 225 million years ago, the earliest mammals appeared — tiny, shrew-like creatures scurrying in the shadows of the dinosaurs, waiting for their turn.
First birds
Around 150 million years ago, feathered dinosaurs took to the air. The birds at your feeder today are living dinosaurs — the only branch of the family that survived.
Asteroid ends the dinosaurs
66 million years ago, a city-sized asteroid struck and the non-bird dinosaurs vanished. Their loss cleared the way for mammals — and eventually us.
First primates
Around 55 million years ago, early primates climbed into the trees. From this branch would eventually come monkeys, apes — and, much later, humans.
Genus Homo
About 2.8 million years ago, the first members of our genus, Homo, made stone tools. On this whole scroll, that's already within the last ~25 pixels.
Homo sapiens
Our species, Homo sapiens, is only ~300,000 years old. All of human existence is the final 0.007% of Earth's story — a single hair's breadth at the very bottom of this page.
Farming begins
Just ~12,000 years ago humans began to farm. Every city, every empire, all of recorded history fits into the last fraction of a pixel of Earth's 4.54-billion-year timeline.
