Formula

Area to buy = surface area × (1 + waste% / 100)

Boxes = ceil( area to buy / coverage per box )

Dimensions are converted to meters first, then a waste allowance is added to the surface area and the result is divided by the coverage per box and rounded up.

What is a Flooring Calculator?

A flooring calculator works out how much flooring you need to cover a room and how many boxes that adds up to. Enter the room area directly, or its length and width, then add a waste allowance for cuts and the coverage area printed on each box (for laminate, vinyl, engineered or hardwood flooring). The tool adds the waste percentage to the surface area, divides by the coverage per box and rounds up to whole boxes. Optionally enter a single board size to estimate the number of planks. Both metric (m, cm) and imperial (ft, in) units are supported, making it handy for living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and whole-home projects.

How to Use

1. Choose metric or imperial units. 2. Enter the room area, or switch to dimensions and enter length and width. 3. Set a waste percentage (5-10% for straight layouts, more for diagonal). 4. Enter the coverage per box from the product label. 5. Optionally enter a single board's length and width to estimate planks. 6. Read the area to buy and the number of boxes.

Formula & Definition

Area to buy = surface area × (1 + waste% / 100) Boxes = ceil( area to buy / coverage per box ) For example, a 20 m² room with 10% waste needs 22 m²; with 2.2 m² per box that is ceil(22 / 2.2) = 10 boxes.

Interpreting Results

The headline figure is the floor area you should buy, including the waste allowance. Boxes are rounded up to whole boxes, so the box count usually covers a little more than the bare area - keep the spares from the same batch for future repairs, since later batches may differ in shade. Increase the waste percentage for diagonal or herringbone layouts and for rooms with many doorways, alcoves and cut-ins. The optional board estimate is approximate; always trust the coverage per box printed on the product.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much flooring do I need?

Take the room area, add 5-10% for waste, then divide by the coverage per box and round up. This calculator does it for you for laminate, vinyl and hardwood.

How much waste should I add for flooring?

5-10% is typical for a straight layout. Use 15% or more for diagonal or herringbone patterns and rooms with many cuts around doorways and fixtures.

What is coverage per box?

It is the floor area one box covers, printed on the product label - for example 2.2 m² per box. Dividing your area to buy by this number gives the boxes you need.

Why buy extra flooring?

Cuts, off-cuts, mistakes and future repairs. Spares from the same production batch match the shade and finish, which a later batch may not.

Does it work for laminate, vinyl and hardwood?

Yes. The math is the same for any plank or board flooring - just enter the coverage per box for your chosen product.
