About the Nursing Dosage Calculator
This is an educational and practice tool for the dimensional-analysis (factor-label) method of dosage calculation — the exact skill nursing students drill in pharmacology and skills labs. It is not a clinical tool and must never be used to compute a real dose for patient administration: always verify every calculation with a licensed professional, follow your facility's protocol, and use an independent double-check before giving any medication. What the tool does show is how the math works. In the basic-dose mode you enter the ordered (desired) dose and the strength you have on hand per tablet or per mL, and the "desired over have" ratio gives the amount to give — with the mass units cancelling and any mcg/mg/g conversion shown as its own factor. The weight-based mode multiplies a mg/kg order by the patient's weight (converting pounds to kilograms first) to get the total dose, then optionally divides by a concentration to get a volume. The IV mode turns a volume and a time into a continuous flow rate in mL/hr and, given a drop factor, a drip rate in drops per minute, rounded to whole drops. Every answer is shown as a factor-label chain so you can see which units cancel and check the working — the same way you would on an exam. The arithmetic is deterministic; the learning is in reading the chain.

How dimensional analysis solves dosages
Dimensional analysis (the factor-label method) treats every value as a number with a unit and multiplies by conversion-factor fractions until the unwanted units cancel and only the answer's unit is left. • Basic dose: amount to give = ordered dose × (form ÷ strength). For example, an ordered 500 mg with 250 mg per tablet gives 500 mg × (1 tablet ÷ 250 mg) = 2 tablets; the milligrams cancel. If the order and the strength use different units — say 0.5 g ordered against a 250 mg tablet — an extra factor (1000 mg ÷ 1 g) converts grams to milligrams first. • Weight-based dose: total dose = dose per kg × weight in kg. A 5 mg/kg order for a 20 kg patient is 5 mg/kg × 20 kg = 100 mg; pounds are converted with 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg before multiplying. Divide by a concentration (for example 50 mg/mL) to get the volume: 100 mg × (1 mL ÷ 50 mg) = 2 mL. • IV rate: flow rate = volume ÷ time. 1000 mL over 8 hr is 125 mL/hr. With a drop factor, drip rate = volume × drop factor ÷ time in minutes: 1000 mL × 15 gtt/mL ÷ 480 min = 31.25, rounded to 31 gtt/min, because you cannot deliver a fractional drop. Seeing the units cancel is the check: if the leftover unit is not the one you want, the setup is wrong.

What is dimensional analysis in dosage calculation?
Dimensional analysis, also called the factor-label method, solves a dosage by writing the known values as fractions and multiplying so the unwanted units cancel diagonally, leaving only the unit you want. For a basic dose that is ordered dose × (form ÷ strength): 500 mg × (1 tablet ÷ 250 mg) = 2 tablets, with the milligrams cancelling. It is the method most nursing programs teach because the cancelling units act as a built-in check — if the leftover unit is wrong, the setup is wrong. How do I calculate an IV drip rate, and why is it rounded?
The drip rate in drops per minute is the volume times the tubing's drop factor divided by the time in minutes: 1000 mL × 15 gtt/mL ÷ 480 min = 31.25 gtt/min. It is rounded to the nearest whole drop — 31 gtt/min — because an IV set can only deliver whole drops, not fractions of one. The continuous flow rate in mL/hr is separate: volume divided by time in hours, so 1000 mL over 8 hr is 125 mL/hr, and it is not rounded to a whole number. How does a weight-based (mg/kg) dose work?
A weight-based order multiplies a dose per kilogram by the patient's weight in kilograms. A 5 mg/kg order for a 20 kg patient is 5 mg/kg × 20 kg = 100 mg. If the weight is in pounds, convert first with 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. When a concentration is available you can go one step further to a volume by dividing the total dose by the strength: 100 mg with a 50 mg/mL solution is 100 mg × (1 mL ÷ 50 mg) = 2 mL.
