What is a Tip Calculator?
A tip calculator works out the gratuity on a bill and can split the total among any number of people at the same time. In countries with a strong tipping culture — the United States above all — a tip is a customary reward for service paid on top of the bill, and restaurants typically expect around 15–20%. Customs vary widely elsewhere: in much of Europe a service charge may already be included, while in Japan tipping is essentially absent and prices include service. Tipping is a frequent source of uncertainty when traveling, and this tool lets you calculate an appropriate amount in seconds and divide the total cleanly so a group can pay without awkward mental math.
How to Use
1. Enter the bill amount (the total before tip).
2. Choose the tip percentage. In US restaurants 15–20% is typical.
3. Enter the number of people to see the per-person share.
The result shows the tip amount, the grand total, and how much each person owes.
Formula & Definition
The math is straightforward:
Tip = bill × tip rate (%) ÷ 100
Total = bill + tip
Per person = total ÷ number of people
For example, an $80 bill at 18% gives a $14.40 tip, a $94.40 total, and $23.60 each when split four ways. Whether you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount is a matter of local custom and personal preference; many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal.
Interpreting Results
There is no single 'correct' tip — the percentage reflects your satisfaction with the service. In US restaurants, 15% is a baseline, 20% or more signals excellent service, and a noticeably low tip can be read as dissatisfaction. Counter service, takeout, and fast food often expect little or no tip, while bellhops, taxi drivers, and hairdressers each have their own norms. For larger groups, restaurants sometimes add an automatic gratuity to the bill, so check the itemized receipt to avoid tipping twice. When in doubt, a small extra amount for good service is always appreciated.
